The Illustrated Story
A temple had stood half-abandoned for a generation. A new abbot rebuilt the gate, cleaned the hall, and set the festival dates on the village boards. Some came out of curiosity; some out of old loyalty; some because they had nowhere else to be. The abbot took them as they were, gave them work, and asked no one's history. By the second year the temple was full. "I did not gather them," he said. "I made a place where they could gather themselves." A true centre forms not around a demand, but around a worthy purpose patiently maintained.
