The Story

A grandmother kept a small house, a kitchen, a courtyard, three generations. Each morning she assigned the day's work: the eldest swept, the middle cooked, the youngest carried water. She did not shout. She did not explain. She was impeccable in her own tasks. The children grew up knowing, without being told, the difference between a dish carelessly washed and a dish washed with care. Those children became magistrates, merchants, teachers. "Where did you learn your method?" they were asked. "In my grandmother's courtyard," each of them said, "where nothing was taught, and everything was learned."

The Six Lines

  1. First (Bottom) Firm seclusion within the family. Remorse disappears. Clear boundaries from the start prevent larger trouble.
  2. Second She should not follow her whims. She must attend within to the food. Perseverance brings good fortune. Tending to the essential domestic task rather than indulging impulse.
  3. Third When tempers flare up in the family, too great severity brings remorse. Good fortune nonetheless. When woman and child dally and laugh, it leads in the end to humiliation. Strictness is better than lax indulgence, though neither extreme is ideal.
  4. Fourth She is the treasure of the house. Great good fortune. A wise home-maker is the centre of wealth for the family.
  5. Fifth As a king he approaches his family. Fear not. Good fortune. Leadership of the household with warmth rather than coldness.
  6. Sixth (Top) His work commands respect. In the end good fortune comes. Quiet authority earned through consistent conduct.
